Vidusign is about the creative use of video for young deaf people aged 15-24 who are in transition from school to work. Video has been used for a long time in connection with sign language but most of the time as a static communication tool. Vidusign is exploring the creative side of videos and support creative discovery and problem-solving learning.

Vidusign is based on a visual approach and transversal work – across different countries and sign languages.

ViduSign is a 2 year European project –Key Activity 3 ICT (2013-2015) that will explore the creative use of video production for the young deaf. It will investigate how video can support creative discovery and problem-based learning using a multiple communication approach. It will work transversally, across different countries, to help young deaf people, aged 15 to 24, in their education and vocational preparation.

What the project has developed:

After initial pre-research done by two European Universities, a production matrix provides ideas for teachers and learners to get involved in the creative use of video from beginning to advanced level – starting with basic video production (one shot video and online broadcast), intermediate (stop motion and photo stories) and advanced examples (Deaf poetry video and short documentary).

The project involves specialist teachers who have piloted the project practices and have provided  feedback on the effectiveness

Vidusign has produced six video models that will inspire  teachers and learners how to get involved in the creative use of video. The videos  go from beginner to advanced level.

After designing and adjusting the concepts together with deaf youngsters across Europe, the project has produced pedagogical materials that include printed and online materials, and video tutorials by teacher training institutes and associations.
